The Innovation Network for Advanced Materials Welcomes Syzygy Plasmonics as Startup Member

Berlin, Germany (12 February 2021)—INAM, the Innovation Network for Advanced Materials, is pleased to announce Syzygy Plasmonics as their newest startup member.

“Although their name often gets us tongue-tied, there is no confusion as to why Syzygy Plasmonics is a perfect fit for our network,” said INAM’s Managing Director, Antonia Caraveteanu. “Their work with photocatalysts and their technology touching on industries such as gas and energy, we saw great potential for collaborations within the INAM network.”

Merriam-Webster defines the word ‘Syzygy’ as “the nearly straight-line configuration of three celestial bodies (such as the sun, moon, and earth during an eclipse)”. For the company, this word means the alignment of three things that are shaping the future. These are Energy, Technology, and Sustainability. When these align, you get Syzygy Plasmonics.

Syzygy is a technology company developing a new type of photocatalytic chemical reactor to revolutionize the industrial gas, chemical, and energy industries. This reactor will reduce both cost and emissions for major commodity chemicals. Examples of these chemicals include raw materials for transportation fuel, fertilizer, and plastic.

At the heart of their chemical reactor is the world’s most active photocatalyst. This means that their reactor is powered by light instead of heat that comes from burning fuel. Because of this, their reactor is able to reduce both cost and carbon emissions for the products that are created.

Syzygy's core technology has been demonstrated on many different high-value chemical reactions. But, as an early stage company they want to focus on an individual product to be successful. Their first go-to-market product will be a distributed hydrogen production system for small-scale hydrogen consumers. Examples of these consumers include manufacturers of semi-conductors, LED’s, float glass, food oil, metal, and users of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles.

INAM was introduced to Syzygy in early 2020 and were happy to recruit CEO, Trevor Best as a mentor for AdMaCom - INAM’s accelerator for Advanced Materials Startups - last October. Soon after, they signed on as a member of the network.
